Search engines rank pages by the content supplied and evaluate the content ranking partly based on the semantic tags used. (i.e. <title>, <h1>, <h2>, <meta>,...) The appropriate <meta> tags should be supplied and modified/tweaked for each page. Our toolkit provides easy ways to enter <meta> tags for each page and includes base page templates with proper semantic tagging.
A semantic URL is one that is easily read and understood by both a human and a Search engine. URLs should use the '-' as a word seperator instead of a space and should not end in .aspx or have the extra /pages that SharePoint includes. Our toolkit will strip out these bad words and characters and tranforms a URL like:
- www.sharepointhq.com/services/pages/seo_and_accessibility.aspx to
XHTML validation ensures that the page contains proper HTML according to the published standards and hence Search Engines prefer these pages and reward you with a higher ranking. You can test a site by using a validator such as Total Validator. Our toolkit ensures that SharePoint will validate.
